Rock Socks and a New Free Download

July 3, 2012 in Sketchbook, Wordful Wednesday

There are some things that I may never understand. Turkey stuffing. Taco Bell. The reason a child would stuff his well-worn cowboy boots with large rocks.

And then walk around the yard and play with those rocks in his boots, like they were socks.

When we were ready to go inside, he asked me to help him take off the boots. He was unable to get them off himself, because, apparently, the rocks were preventing his foot from leaving the boot. As I pulled each one off, a variety of stones fell into a pile on the steps. I don’t anticipate rock socks catching on anytime soon.

For this collage, I used a background texture that I painted with acrylics in my sketchbook. I am pleased to offer it to you as a new free download! If you use it for a project, please come back and let me know! I’d love to see. Happy Wordful Wednesday!

Sketchbook – Where Have Thou Been?

May 3, 2012 in Sketchbook

It’s hard to believe that I haven’t done a peek into my sketchbook since February! The truth is I have been so busy changing some things here on the blog and exploring my business plans, I have neglected my sketchbook. I took my paper, paints, and markers to retreat with plans to spend some of my free time working on a painting.

This is the painting I worked on at our recent ladies retreat. I need to make birds, but my birds weren’t working out right, especially their eyes for some reason. I have ideas for this painting and you may be seeing more of it in the future.

Long Necked Leaf Eaters

I am not an animal person. I don’t like cats or dogs. I can’t keep a fish alive. To be honest, I really don’t even care that much for the zoo.

My daughter is the opposite. She loves animals. Every stuffed animal she cares for has a name. She tries to befriend every dog or cat she encounters. She can be found out in the yard picking up worms or bugs.

Yesterday, she asked me what my favorite animal was. I really struggled to come up with an answer. Finally I came up with the turtle. She immediately said, “Why, because they aren’t hairy?” (You see, being a staunch dog and cat lover, the answer turtle probably seemed a controversial choice in her world.)

“Yes, Sissy, they aren’t hairy and they are slow.”

That seemed to satisfy her curiosity about my pet choices and I finished tucking her in.

I may not love being around animals, but I enjoy sketching them now and then. I don’t know why, but I especially like sketching giraffe’s. Previously, I shared this sketch with you of a girly girl giraffe.

One night DeanO was in our bedroom while I was sketching and he was supposed to be sleeping. He suggested some giraffe character ideas and we had a fun few moments discussing and giggling. Later I attempted to add some watercolor, but I still can’t quite get the hang of it. That’s what practice is for, right?

You’ll be seeing more of these two as I already have an idea for a new free download. Keep your eyes open for that to be posted in the next few days.

What about you. What is your favorite animal? Leave me a comment below!…
