Reflection is More than Thoughtfulness

September 28, 2012 in Creative Photography Tips, Tutorials and DIY

Here’s a good trick: Get a job as a judge at the Olympics. Then, if some guy sets a world record, pretend that you didn’t see it and go, “Okay, is everybody ready to start now?” – Jack Handy

While I appreciate deep thoughts, especially funny or clever ones, that is not the type of reflection that I want to talk about today.

I am always on the search for creative ways to photograph something. Photographing reflections can be a wonderful way to practice your photography skills, and stretch your creativity.

These shots were taken in the kitchen as Sissy scooped watermelon into a stainless steel bowl. The interesting thing about a bowl is that you really have to work the angle to make sure that you are not in the photo. She happily scooped away while I climbed on tables, chairs, laid on the table, stood on the table, and contorted my body into hurtful positions. I am totally willing to get dirty, look weird, and seem strange to get the shot I want. Look for reflections on metal bowls, mirrors, windows, puddles, lakes, raindrops, jewelry, door knobs, glasses, balloons, etc.

The next time you are taking a picture of anything, look for a reflection, and work the angle to get a creative shot.

The Black and White Conversion

Converting your photos to black and white in Photoshop or another photo editing program can be frustrating. I read this tutorial from Spoon Graphics today, and I decided to try some of the techniques it describes.

I really like what the channel mixer method produced. It seems brighter, and the tonal range is better.

I’d love to hear what you think about these images! If you have a different technique, tell me about it in the comments.
